10 SEPTEMBER 2018 - DALE CHIHULY: THE WORLD’S FOREMOST GLASS ARTIST

American glass artist Dale Chihuly (born 1941) is the superstar of the glass world. With his passion for glass, his larger than life personality, his skills as a natural leader and educator, and his constant exploration of glass’s luminous qualities, he creates glass sculptures which are extravagant, colourful and spectacular. From his early beginnings with vessels decorated with designs inspired by native American Indian blankets, he has progressed to creating huge installations in historic cities, museums, gardens and hotels around the world, including Helsinki, Venice and Jerusalem. In England the visitor to the Victoria and Albert Museum is welcomed by his 27 feet high chandelier and in 2005-6 his organic sculptures filled the greenhouses, lawns and lakes at Kew Gardens. Following two accidents he is no longer able to hold a blowing iron and now employs two glass teams to blow his visions from his spontaneous drawings, themselves works of art. Many other international glass artists of the calibre of Lino Tagliapietra often collaborate with Chihuly on his glass fantasies. His glass magic has transformed the studio glass movement and altered our visual perception of this extraordinary material for ever.

Lectures are held in the Walker Hall,Troon(MAP) and last about one hour.

Members should be seated by 1.20pm for a prompt 1.30pm start.
